Miss Black Louisiana USA 2013, Chante’ Rice is excited to invite you to interact with P.U.M.P.S. participants at our P.U.M.P.S. Legacy of Success & Empowerment Luncheon! Miss Rice prides herself in empowering our communities. It is important that we continue to invest in the academic and professional development of our youth, which is the core of our mission. With that being said, we are extending an invitation for you to join us to empower at least one youth and network with other women who are leaders in their respective industries.

Below you will find a number of important details regarding this event. Please read through this letter in its entirety to ensure that you have all the necessary information to plan and prepare accordingly.

We are asking that you register no later than COB Friday, March 25, 2013.

Cost: $50. Lunch for you and your mentee. You may sponsor more than one participant.

Details:

We are asking all partners to arrive at the Renaissance Hotel between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2013 to check in. Check in is essential, as we must have an accurate head count to seat everyone accordingly. Between 10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., there will be an informal meet and greet amongst our partners (approximately 250 professionals). At 11:45 a.m., we will have a very brief orientation, at which time we briefly discuss the objective of the event (along with expectations for the conversations that you will be having with the P.U.M.P.S. participants).

What is the setup and structure of the luncheon?

There will be about five professionals at each table, with the remaining five seats being occupied by P.U.M.P.S. participants. We are anticipating close to 250 students at the luncheon. After brief remarks from Miss Black Louisiana USA 2013, Chante’ D. Rice, a plated lunch will be served.

During this time, our key-note speaker will provide words of empowerment, which should last approximately twenty minutes. After lunch, professionals and P.U.M.P.S. participants will have forty-five minutes to network and engage in conversations regarding college and post-college life.

What should I speak about with the youth?

As successful leaders, your perspectives and experiences are invaluable to the participants. Firstly, it will be important to be approachable, as it is very possible that some of the youth (particularly the younger ones) may be initially intimidated. The objective of this event is to empower the participants to conceive of your professions as realistic future professions for themselves. We will provide you all with a list of talking point to spark the dialogue.

Try to structure your advice broadly, as it is likely that the participants will have a number of different interests. Remember, as junior or high school students, our participants will benefit more from general guidance for college success than specific advice you might give a junior in college preparing for the MCAT or LSAT

Should I bring anything?

You are encouraged to bring business cards to distribute to P.U.M.P.S. participants (and to other professionals that you will meet before the luncheon). Other than that, we ask that you bring great energy, passion, and enthusiasm!

Background:

This Legacy of Success & Empowerment Luncheon has been designed to provide nearly 250 students with an opportunity to meet and interact with successful women of color across various professional fields within the state of Louisiana. This luncheon will serve as one of the culminating events of 2013 hosted by Miss Black Louisiana USA’s reigning queen, which will leave an indelible mark on our participants.
